FAQs

The Students of Salaam (SOS) Immigrant Student Scholarship Fund launched in 2018 to support the academic and professional goals of immigrant students, regardless of citizenship status, through personalized mentorship and financial assistance. We care about who you are, and what your goals are — your application is reviewed holistically, and there are no GPA or test score cutoffs.

ARE YOU CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS?

No. Our 2021 Scholarship application closed on April 30th, 2021. We have currently paused future cycles and will update this page when we plan to open another award.

I APPLIED IN 2021; WHEN WILL I HEAR BACK?

Decisions were released in July. Meet the SOS Scholars.

HOW MANY SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE THIS YEAR? WHAT IS THE AWARD?

This year, we are excited to be able to award four scholarships of $3,000 each! Each scholarship recipient is considered an SOS Scholar. All SOS Scholars will receive one-on-one career mentorship and $3,000 towards tuition, textbooks, supplies, or living expenses.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

There are three criteria to apply. You must be:

  1. A student who has immigrated to the United States

  2. Will be enrolled in a post-secondary undergraduate institution for the Fall 2021-Spring 2022 academic year.

  3. Not a relative of the SOS National Board (i.e. the application reviewers)

WHAT QUALIFIES AS A POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTION?

Any accredited post-secondary education institution (e.g. university or community college) listed on the United States Department of Education. We cannot support recipients planning on attending for-profit educational institutions.

WHO WILL REVIEW APPLICATIONS?

Applications will be reviewed by the SOS National Board. No relatives of the SOS Board are eligible to apply.

Reserved Rights

SOS reserves the right to grant awards to more than one applicant, provided that at least one applicant receives the designated amount of $1,000.

This means if we receive more donations, we will increase the scholarship sum and/or select more students to receive funding!
