Refugee and Immigrant Student Education (RISE) is the New Haven branch of Students of Salaam. RISE is focused on in-school education and community events for New Haven’s residents.
Whether you're an individual navigating the U.S. for the first time, a community member who wants to learn more about your new neighbors, or an educator seeking support, RISE is here for you.
A Two-Way-Street
RISE employs Students of Salaam’s two-way-street approach to community, designed to support newcomers and locals through academic and experience-based education.
Education
Our RISE Ambassadors support the personal and academic success of students regardless of English language ability.
Our goal is to allow students to learn in their native language and English, since we believe English language level should not be a barrier to quality education and connection.
RISE Ambassadors use a combination of SOS’ original curriculum + individualized tutoring, to deliver lessons that allow students to learn at their grade level, while fostering self-reflection, critical thinking, and creative expression. We deliver these lessons through small-group, in-school sessions and via at-home tutoring.
Our ambassadors speak languages like Farsi, Pashto, Dari, Arabic, Spanish, and French. We’ve worked with over 500 community members in New Haven.
Community Engagement
Our community events help strengthen ties between locals and their new neighbors.
Our goal is for migration to enrich and strengthen the social fabric of a community, rather than contribute to division.
Through celebration and exchange, these events help dispel stereotypes and break down barriers of fear or misunderstanding.
Past RISE programming includes: film nights, multicultural festivals, poetry festivals, cooking classes, and community picnics.
